How to do an optional argument in logging formatter
I would like to use the following log formatter:
'format': '"message": "%(message)s", "user": "%(user)s"'
However, I'd like to call it in two different ways:
log.info('hi', extra="user": str(request.user))
log.info("hi")
The first log statement works because it has the user
kwarg, but the second one fails with a KeyError
. Is there any way to make a formatting argument optional?

Off the top of my head I think you'll have to write yourself a custom Formatter that knows how to respond if it gets aKeyError
, but there might be an easier way.

What's wrong withextra="user": None
?

@Bakuriu sometimes I'll be calling this from outside the application -- so for backwards compatibility as well.

See thisCustomAdapter
example in the logging cookbook. You can useself.extra.get('user')
to default it toNone
when not supplied.
