Invalid Viewstate Errors on Contact page - would spam bots cause them?

0

Our error log is full of invalid view state errors.

Validation of viewstate MAC failed

These all appear to be for our contact page.
When I run the contact page my self and send a message it all works fine.

I have checked the MS Support page (as suggested in the comment below) for possible causes:

  1. The web application is running in a farm (multi-server environment) - This site is on a single server

  2. The worker process uses the IIS 7.0 application pool identity This is running on Windows Server 2012 so not relavent

  3. The application pool is configured by using LoadUserProfile=false and a new auto generated key would be created every time the application restarts It is set to false but there are 1000's of these errors and they don't all correspond to an application restart, plus they are only on the contact page

  4. The Page.ViewStateUserKey property has an incorrect value

I suspect it is point 4 but I am not sure why.

Would these errors be caused by some bot trying to send spam or do something like that where maybe they've tried editing the page? If so is there a way to stop it happening?

OR could they be "real" errors? If so What else could be causing them?

The page has a captcha on it if it makes a difference.

You list none of the causes mentioned on support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/2915218/… as irrelevant, so what have you tried and which scenario applies?
