Why is PO format preferred for LinguiJS config

As mentioned here the PO should be the preferred format field in .linguirc. I fail to understand the reason behind it. The minimal format gives more user friendly JSON. I would like to personally prefer that to PO format but that's because I don't understand the importance of PO here.
