Using Sockets to find out of a resource exists

I am building a script that looks for machines at a specific port. If it doesn't find anything at that port I want to see if a web page exists on port 80 (e.g. index.html). Here is my code:

import os
import socket
import sys

if not sock.connect_ex((addr, DEFAULT_PORT)):
is_up = True
else:
# port 80 check
if sock.connect_ex((addr, 80)):
is_up = True
else:
print os.strerror(sock.connect_ex((addr, 80)))
is_up = False

Is there a way in sockets to check if index.html exists on port 80? I get an invalid argument error when trying to connect on port 80.

  • Which errnos? Can’t see any reference to errno in the code you posted.

  • 22 and 37 are the errno's returned

  • You could put a minimal amount of effort into seaching for something like, perhaps, at a wild guess, socket errno and most likely find something educational, and by so doing might reduce the waste of time asking questions on StackOverflow.
