JavaFXML Scene Builder custom dialog

I am getting to grips with JavaFXML and Scene Builder. (Scene Builder 8.4.1 and Java 1.8.0_171).

I present data in a TableView and then wish to present a modal dialog to enable adding or editing of the data presented in the row. The editing process is not simple text and so I wish to use an FXML dialog created in Scene Builder, having it's own controller.

Can anyone please direct me to documentation or articles where I can find answers to the following:

Is there a "Best Practice" approach to this kind of operation?

How do I launch or display the custom FXML dialog?

How do I pass existing data (from the row) into my dialog?

How best to return data from the dialog (ideally as an instance of a class)?

I have written a button handler to hide() the dialog when done, but I am not sure if this is the correct approach.

I apologise if this question has been asked and answered before. It is difficult to search for answers without knowing the appropriate nomenclature.
