Why is Visual Studio auto-claiming file extensions even after I change the default app?

Every time I want to edit a small .json file, I have to go to open-with and select Sublime Text because even if I set it as the default app for .json, Visual Studio auto-claims it in less than 10 milliseconds. It's like it has a listener that hears a default extension change and returns it to its domain.

How and why does it do this? Is there any way to change this?

I recorded a small video of the event:

More likely a Windows 10 issue (bug) than a malicious intent in Visual Studio.

  • Any idea about how to solve it?

  • You might want to try Google or stackoverflow.com/questions/53035180/…. I have seen several cases where it has been impossible to change a file association in Windows 10.

  • Weird! You could try to run the Process Monitor tool for sysinternals and filter registry events + ".json" text. You should see what process changes it.
